40 Hours... 40 DAYS?!
Okay, so this weekend I participated in the 40 Hour Famine. I started 9pm Friday night, and it finishes at 1pm this afternoon (It's Sunday here in Australia).The 40 Hour Famine is run by WorldVision, and raises money for starving people. People who are literally starving. I mean, I thought I was starving! At least I only have 5 hours to go.... yay! Anyway, I'll keep explaining about the 40 Hour Famine, in case any of you want to do it next year! =P
You don't actually have to give up food for 40 Hours. You can go without furniture, electronics, books -- whatever you want. But the point is to make you realize what it's really like without something that you rely on that much. To go without something for 40 Hours that will help you to understand just a tiny bit about how real people, living in the same world as us -- live.
Doing this, for 40 Hours -- made me remember & realize something. Jesus. Matthew 4.
JESUS WENT FORTY DAYS WITHOUT FOOD
Next Jesus was taken into the wild by the Spirit for the Test. The Devil was ready to give it.
Jesus prepared for the Test by fasting forty days and forty nights. That left him, of course, in a state of extreme hunger, which the Devil took advantage of in the first test:
"Since you are God's Son, speak the word that will turn these stones into loaves of bread."
Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: "It takes more than bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God's mouth."
That's the first part of the passage. You see what it's saying? It takes more than FOOD to stay alive. It takes, " a steady stream of words from God's mouth"
So, even though I'm so hungry right now, there's 3 things to remember:
1) Jesus did it for forty days. Even though he IS Jesus, he came to earth as a human. He starved just as much as anyone -- afterall, in the verse it says he was "in a state of extreme hunger"
2) It's not food that keeps us alive -- it's God
3) Just remember all those starving people, in places like Africa!

Wow! That sounds really hard, Emii. I don't think that I could go without food for that long. Maybe, however, I will try it next year if it will help starving children in Africa and all over the world. It makes me really sad to think about the children that die every day because of starvation. I can't even imagine the hunger pains that they go through every day because of poverty. I mean I've been pretty hungry at times, but never starving to death. It makes me want to cry just thinking about it.

Oh, so you Australians are just trying to outdo the Americans aren't you? Haha, I'm just kidding. We do a 30 Hour Famine. I've done it three times and it's really not that bad after a while. If I hadn't done it with my youth group friends, I would have been sitting at home being incredibly tempted by the food sitting on the table. 40 hours would definitely something different to try. Our 30 Hour Famines are also from World Vision.

ReplyDeleteI'm so proud of you! Good on you for doing it! I wasn't able to participate this year, but I hope to next year! I have done it a few times before... back when I was in primary school... :) It's heaps of fun, especially when you do a mega sleepover with friends during the 'no food' hours...
