~Mini Interview~ Nancy Rue!!!!!
Hey Girlz,
Welcome to the second mini-interview at Girlz 4 God! If you missed our first interview, click Here to read the interview with teen author, Melody Carlson! :)
Today's Mini-Interview is with teen & tween author, Mrs Nancy Rue!!!
Let's get started :)
Did you keep a diary when you were a teen/tween? If you did, in what ways has this helped you in your writing career?
I didn’t start keeping a diary until I was – wow – in my thirties. But since then I’ve written three pages almost every single day and it has made a huge difference not only in my writing career but in my growth as a person. It gives me a place to vent so I don’t hurt other people’s feelings with my grumpy stuff. Once I get all of that out, I pray on paper, asking God for God’s guidance, and then I just write, freely. Sometimes that helps me sort out whatever I’m dealing with. Sometimes it helps me make a plan for the day. Sometimes it makes no sense at all! But it always clears my head for the writing day ahead, and it often clears up plot problems or gives me ideas for characters. I’d be so much less productive and truthful if I didn’t journal.
When you were younger, did you have a lot of photos with you and your friends taken? If you did, which is your favourite? And why?
What an interesting question about photos with my friends! We didn’t, of course, have digital cameras back then, so we had to take pix on film and take the film to the drugstore to be developed, which took, like, a week – needless to say we didn’t take as many pix as you guys do now! Of the ones I do have, I think the ones from high school are my favorites.
“The Mystery of Eleanor Village”, which you wrote when you were 10 years old – well, has never been seen by your fellow readers – at least, I’ve never seen it. Do you think you could show us, one day soon?! We’d love to see how Mrs Nancy Rue first started her writing career!
The Mystery of Eleanor Village went by the wayside a long time ago! All I can really remember about it is that my family had been to this resort in Daytona Beach, Florida, for a long weekend, something we never did. And I had a cold so my mom wouldn’t let me swim in the ocean. I had to sit on the sand and watch my friend Donna out there having fun with the dads. Rather than whine and cry, which is what I wanted to do, I made up a story while I was sitting there. I loved Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden at that time, so a whole thing about some kids getting kidnapped took shape. That’s all I remember!
What do you normally do after one of your books have just been published?
Oops, I think Nancy forgot to answer this one :)
If God gave you the chance to be heard by every single person on this earth, what would you say to them?
Wow – if every single person on the earth could hear me? Scary! But I know what I would say. I would say, “God loves you and wants to take care of you. Just pray for God’s guidance in everything you do, and follow it. That’s all.”
The verse in the Bible that’s been with you all along, in hard and good times – what is it?
My “life verse”, I think is what you’re referring to? I actually have two. One is what I always come back to when I feel like I’m off base, out of line, wandering around aimlessly: “Whoever did want him, who believed she was who he claimed and would do what he said, He made to be their true selves, their child-of-God selves.” (John 1:12-13) The other is what I remember when I’m having an issue in a relationship: Mark 12:29-31.
Do you prefer using a laptop/computer or paper to write with?
I definitely prefer to write on a computer. I’m almost one with it now! But I do journal my characters on paper and sometimes I have to get away from the screen and keyboard and go off with a pad and pen to work something out for a story.
The outfit you’d just LOVE to be seen in – complimented in – look beautiful in. What does it look like?!
My dream outfit? How fun is that? I would love to be in a pair of wide-legged, high-waisted pants like the actresses used to wear in the 30’s and 40’s, with a short jacket that fit perfectly and a bright scarf around my neck. With high heels and a slouchy leather bag thrown over my shoulder, I’d be stylin’! (this makes me want to go shopping!)
When you’re writing a story, how do you plan it? How do you think of the plot, what’s going to happen, what the characters are like? I’d love to know, I have so much trouble with giving my stories a point, a plot :)
Planning a story is a huge thing for me. I usually spend months (while I’m actually writing something else) gathering all kinds of ideas and putting them in notebooks and on cards. When it’s time to get down to business, I spend time having the protagonist (main character) write to me in a journal so I know who she is, while at the same time developing a plot skeleton – I determine where she is at the start of the story and where I want her to be at the end, and then I fill in the middle very loosely. Once I’ve done that, I do more research for anything that’s come up that I don’t know about – then I make a detailed chapter by chapter summary. I spend more time planning then I do writing. I think it’s what makes the writing so easy (well, sort of easy!) for me. It’s all about what I want my audience to get from the story. I stay focused on that, and the story seems to come together from there
Nancy, thanks you SO much for giving me the chance to interview you!
