my problem

You want to know what one of the things I'm always struggling with when I'm writing? Keeping it in the same "person". Like, first person or third person or whatever.

So, I start by writing,
"I paused. “Well, you know its Beth’s party tonight, and we’ve been friends for ages. I couldn’t really miss it,” I explained, hoping she’d just accept it."
And then a few thousand words later, I stop writing and realize that I've been writing, "
Maya squeezed into the booth, and Kayla and Macy slipped into the one across, which left Princess no choice but to sit next to Maya. She didn’t seem to mind, though."
Am I the only one with this problem? It's really silly, but I can't seem to stop!:)

  1. Haha, my dog's name is Maya. :p

I do that all the time! I have some trouble writing first person though...it's so confusing, but I write third person all the time and often switch to first and even second!

    God bless,

  2. lol! You're not alone, Emii!!(: I have that same problem, too. Maybe when you're writing, you should read through each paragraph after you've written it to make sure that you're writing in the right person if you feel like you need to fix your problem. Honestly, though, I think that if you switch persons every so often, it provides a new point of view to the story and some variety. But, that's just my opinion :)

  4. I keep doing quirky little things when I write, like switching from 'I' to 'her' when talking about the same person, and calling the girl 'Tania' 'Amira' instead! AHHH!

  5. Oh man, do I totally understand, Emii. I really like first person, but I always seem to drift into Third. xP It drives me crazy cuz then I have to go back through and edit everything!! So know that you're not alone!! :)

    Happy writing!
