Movie Review: Soul Surfer

Last Monday I had the lovely opportunity of going to the movies and watching Soul Surfer. Starring AnnaSophia Robb [Bridge to Terabithia], Soul Surfer is the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a surfer girl whose arm was bitten off by a shark.

And, like, wow.

I loved this movie. There's something about spending two and a half hours of your life in a cinema, coming out and realizing that it was actually worth it. That you didn't just watch some dumb movie with "funny" jokes that are really actually not funny and totally rude. Or some romance where they break up and then get back together again, kiss and breakup, kiss and make-up.

No, this movie goes under "inspirational" for a reason.

When Bethany lost her arm, she didn't blame anyone. She didn't scream and yell and hate God. And you know what else? She didn't give up. That was a pretty big thing for me. There's a verse said throughout the film -- a verse that also happens to be one of my favourite's. Maybe even my life verse.

"I can do anything through Christ who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13

It was a fun movie. There were a couple of points where I nearly started crying. There were some smiling moments.

I think that, though, most importantly... Soul Surfer reflected pieces of life as they actually are. Not some stereotype life where everything's perfect.

As Bethany says in the movie...

When life gets tough, I don't need to give up. When I don't understand why things are like they are... God has a plan.

Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord. "Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future."
