i was blind.. but now.. i see

You've likely (or maybe not) heard of Zach Hunter. He's an abolitionist -- like William Wilberforce was, back in the day. Zach wants to get rid of slavery. Because, yes, it still exists today. The terrors of it all, I'm totally clueless and live in the wonderful world, when a day or so away by plane there's people suffering every single day and I'm helpless because I'm just some kid who can't even drive yet without a parent in the car, let alone travel the world to save the world.

Or am I?

In his book, Be The Change, Zach talks a little about fair trade. What is fair trade?

"Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. "

Instead of people getting paid ten cents a day for making our chocolate and our sport shoes and whatever else we use without a thought during the day, Fairtrade is something that allows us to do something.

Mum bought Fairtrade chocolate the other day. It was different but you know what? I really don't care what it tastes like. I'm making a decision to buy stuff that's fair trade. "What's the point, what difference does it really make?" we're all asking?

Because if we all start buying fairtrade, then companies are going to see that, right? When no-one's buying their stuff they're gonna realize that paying a bit extra for farmers to make stuff is going to be a worthwhile thing.

Are you in? I sure am.

And watch Amazing Grace. That is one of my favourite movies. Not because it's out loud funny... actually, it is really funny. I laugh a lot. Not because it's the most gripping movie in the entire world, like the Hunger Games book. No, it's one of my favourite movies because it inspires me to live and to speak and to believe what is true and good.

...I'm looking up quotes from the movie on some site, and saw this:

William Wilberforce: I'm against flowers in church. What have you to say? Barbara Wilberforce: I am *for* them. William Wilberforce: [both pauseWilliam Wilberforce: [resignedly] As am I.

That's funny because the only thing they were "against" is something about flowers. I nearly wrote "lol" but I didn't.

Anyway, so here's a quote: I love this quote, and I'll put another colon in because I wrote more words:

“We are too young to realize that certain things are impossible... So

we will do them anyway.” -- william pitt

Amazing Grace, underrated, rather impressive movie!

we're young, but so what.
God is everything and He knows and we don't and we got to trust Him with everything we are. I'm reading Romans right now. I love the start of Romans 12, in The Message. Anyone reading anything? Any thoughts about Fair trade and slaves and Zach Hunter and slaves or anything?

ps, obviously i've got no idea whether fairtrade is one word or two words or what, so i wrote it both ways. haha

Comments

  1. I've heard of fair trade before, but I never really understood what it was until now. I'll keep my eyes open for fair trade products next time I'm shopping. Also, I really like that William Pitt quote you used! :)
