book review: saving sailor

So the world went Hunger Games crazy and embraced the fast-paced, exhilarating journey of Katniss Everdeen alongside the Hunter Guy and the Baker's Boy. And I love the Hunger Games. But I'm not into all those books "like" the Hunger Games. The ones that are written in that great way that draws you in so close it's claustrophobic but they're really about nothing at all.

Saving Sailor is a book I found in our school library -- and I searched pretty hard for it, mind you, took me about twenty minutes and a pile of books that I knew I wasn't really going to read to find it -- that I absolutely love.

I don't think I've ever read a book where the main character thinks like I think, wonders the things I wonder. But then again, I don't usually read books where the main character is ten years old. I guess I have the brain of a ten year old. Oh well!

This book is so peaceful. It doesn't wear you out. You turn the pages because you want to, not because you have to because the characters are being threatened and you have to keep going to see if they're gonna make it through the next page.

Ten year old A.J's family are Italian's living in America, only A.J is totally obsessed with a southern accent, which drives her mum crazy. Do you know how many times I smiled and laughed while reading this book? Lot's of times.

There's so many truths, shared in gentle voices and memories and little stories A.J likes to tell. Hilarious  family, great conversations and deep issues written in just the right way.

Written by Renee Riva, Saving Sailor has to got to be the best book of all time. And the ending was just right, just how I wanted it to be.

Just perfect. A.J's story was just right. Brilliant, really. Just brilliant.

  1. I understand that post-Hunger Games feeling. I read the whole thing in two days and I was like "Okay I just need some ponies and rainbows right now." Especially since I'm a magnet for tear-jerking books.

This sounds like a cool book. I might check it out for the sake of giving my emotions a rest.
